Kafka vs Pulsar vs Redpanda: Choosing the Right Streaming Backend in 2026
Choosing a streaming platform is one of the most consequential infrastructure decisions you'll make. The wrong choice can mean months of painful migration. Here's our honest assessment after running all three in production.
Apache Kafka
Strengths: Mature ecosystem, massive community, battle-tested at scale. If you need a connector for something, Kafka has it. The KRaft consensus protocol (no more ZooKeeper!) has simplified operations significantly.
Weaknesses: Operational complexity still bites. Tuning producers and consumers for optimal throughput requires deep expertise. Multi-region replication via MirrorMaker 2 is functional but clunky.
Best for: Organizations with existing Kafka expertise, complex streaming topologies, and a need for the broadest connector ecosystem.
Apache Pulsar
Strengths: Multi-tenancy built in from the ground up. The separation of compute (brokers) and storage (BookKeeper) makes scaling operations much more flexible. Geo-replication is genuinely excellent — we use it for our multi-region deployments.
Weaknesses: Smaller community, fewer managed services. BookKeeper adds operational surface area. Some advanced Kafka features (like exactly-once semantics) are newer and less battle-tested in Pulsar.
Best for: Multi-tenant platforms, geo-distributed deployments, and teams that want native multi-tenancy without building it themselves.
Redpanda
Strengths: Drop-in Kafka API compatibility with dramatically simpler operations. Single binary, no JVM, no ZooKeeper. Throughput is genuinely impressive — we measured 2-3x Kafka's throughput on equivalent hardware for write-heavy workloads.
Weaknesses: Younger ecosystem. Some advanced Kafka features are still catching up. The managed cloud offering is newer than Confluent Cloud.
Best for: Teams that want Kafka's API without Kafka's operational burden. Write-heavy workloads where JVM overhead is a real concern.
Our Recommendation
At BizDone, we use Apache Pulsar as our primary streaming backbone, with Redpanda for latency-sensitive edge deployments. Kafka remains our recommended starting point for most teams — its ecosystem maturity saves more money than the operational overhead costs. But if you're building a multi-tenant platform or need geo-replication from day one, seriously consider Pulsar.
